1.75" x 1.1" The insignia was found near the camp of Colonel Israel Garrard of the 7th Ohio Cavalry. The area was overrun by the Confederates under the command of BG William “Grumble” Jones. With both forces fighting in the area, it could have been lost by any soldier. (On the back, it shows where the pin was attached at one end)
Private Robert Campbell, Company A, 5th Texas, wrote about an incident in July 1862 “The way he knew I was a Texan, was by my cap. In those early days of the war nearly every soldier had his Co. number of regt. and state on his cap in fancy brass letters.”
